Agricultural Workers Receive Free Health Assessments at 3rd HRHCare Day of Health on the North Fork

Free Health Assessments Day of Health 2016Riverhead, NY – HRHCare Community Health hosted a Day of Health for agricultural workers on the North Fork this past Sunday, December 4th. Reaching one of the state’s most underserved populations, the Day of Health, held at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Riverhead, and was the third such event that HRHCare held over the past year. Participating in free health assessments, 84 agricultural workers and their family members were seen.

“The HRHCare Day of Health allows Long Island’s agricultural workers to get access to the quality health care services they deserve,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of HRHCare. “We know that agricultural workers and their families are one of our state’s most chronically underserved populations, and HRHCare is proud to partner with Long Island Sustainable Winegrowers to care for those who do so much for the local economy.”

Second only to tourism and hospitality, agriculture is the largest industry on Long Island; yet agricultural workers and their families often struggle to gain access to quality health care. Many of these families suffer from poor nutrition, asthma, musculo-skeletal conditions, and a lack of preventive care and dental services.

At the HRHCare Day of Health, a bilingual team of physicians and health care professionals provided health assessments and other primary care services free of charge including:

  • Consultation with a bilingual physician and/or pediatrician
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Vaccinations
  • Agricultural Worker Voucher enrollment
  • Health insurance information and enrollment
  • Referrals for specialty care
  • Oraquick (HIV) screening
  • Family health history assessment
  • Medical transportation scheduling
  • Assistance with scheduling a follow-up visit at one of the nine HRHCare Health Centers in Suffolk County for comprehensive medical, behavioral health, dental, and nutrition counseling appointments

The Day of Health is funded by the HRHCare Foundation, supported by the Long Island Sustainable Winegrowers at its Honoring the Hands benefit at Martha Clara Vineyards in July 2016.

The HRHCare Foundation supports the workers behind the scenes of Long Island’s wine industry and other underserved populations in its 10-county service area.
