HRHCare Raises Funds to Support Health Care Access for Long Island Agricultural Workers at Third Annual Honoring the Hands Benefit

Riverhead, NY — Over 130 New Yorkers joined the HRHCare Foundation last Thursday for the third annual Honoring the Hands benefit at Martha Clara Vineyards, raising funds to support access to health care for Long Island agricultural workers and their families. Hosted in partnership with Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing, Long Island Wine Council, Long Island Farm Bureau, former owners of Shinn Estate Vineyards Barbara Shinn and David Page, and Jonathan Russo and Deborah Grayson, the event raised funds to support efforts to introduce agricultural workers to the comprehensive primary care services provided at the nine HRHCare health centers in Suffolk County. One half of the proceeds will be allocated toward a new “Mobile Health Center” van that will bring HRHCare services directly to agricultural workers in the field.

Shinn Estate Vineyards former owners Barbara Shinn and David Page were honored at the event for their partnership and support of the HRHCare “Days of Health” and Honoring the Hands events.

“HRHCare is committed to providing quality primary and preventive care to underserved populations on Long Island,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of HRHCare. “As the only Federally Qualified Health Center in Suffolk County, we’re proud to partner with Honoring the Hands founders Barbara Shinn, David Page, Jonathan Russo, and Deborah Grayson, as well as Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing, the Long Island Wine Council, and the Long Island Farm Bureau to improve health care access to those who put food on our tables. This year, we are especially pleased to honor Barbara Shinn and David page, formerly of Shinn Estate Vineyards, for their support and dedication to making comprehensive care a reality for agricultural workers and their families.”

Proceeds from last year’s event made possible two “Days of Health” for Suffolk County agricultural workers and their families, held at Martha Clara Vineyards and St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Riverhead. Bilingual HRHCare staff provided comprehensive medical and social services, including private consultations with a doctor, pediatric consultations, blood pressure and skin cancer screenings, nutrition education, health insurance enrollment, Oraquick HIV screenings, and vaccinations.
