HRHCare Receives Grant from March of Dimes, Enhancing Prenatal and Newborn Health Services in Yonkers

Peekskill, NY – HRHCare (Hudson River HealthCare), a nonprofit community health center offering comprehensive medical services and preventive care to underserved populations throughout the Hudson Valley and Long Island, announced that it has received a $43,920 grant from the March of Dimes New York State Northern Metro Division. This grant enables HRHCare to initiate its dynamic prenatal health education program, First Steps, and provide one-on-one support for pregnant women to ensure a healthy pregnancy and positive birth outcomes. This grant is one of many that the March of Dimes awards to health care providers across the country in pursuit of its mission to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. It will help HRHCare further engage women in need of prenatal and postpartum care, promoting health for both mother and child.

“Our goal for all of the initiatives we undertake is to provide our communities with access to affordable health care services, and this holds especially true for new mothers and women who are pregnant,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of HRHCare. “Thanks to the support of the March of Dimes, we will help provide women with the prenatal and postpartum care they need to improve their own wellbeing and the health of their children. We are grateful to the March of Dimes and their many donors who have made grants like this possible.”

The grant will support the First Steps prenatal classes to be implemented at HRHCare facilities in Yonkers, as well as the Patient Care Partner who will provide additional support and counseling to the Health Center’s pregnant patients. The First Steps program promotes healthy behaviors such as proper nutrition and smoking cessation for pregnant women, and educates them on what to expect during pregnancy and childbirth in order to improve birth outcomes and reduce caesarean sections. The eight-week series of classes covers information including prenatal care, stress and pregnancy, maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, infant feeding choices, labor and birth, postpartum care and baby care.  Active participants receive the March of Dimes Baby Basics book and a gift bag filled with various baby care items.
