Honorable Alan Steiner
Board Chair
The Honorable Alan Steiner began as a consumer board member with Sun River Health in 1975, later becoming Board Chair. Over the following decades, he has been instrumental in Sun River Health’s growth, innovation, and community engagement – all as a volunteer, having shepherded the health center from a single site in Peekskill, New York to a network of nearly 50 community health centers throughout the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island. Of particular note was Mr. Steiner’s leadership of a $16 million capital expansion of the Sun River Health Jeannette J. Phillips Community Health Center in Peekskill to better meet community needs – increasing medical capacity by 50%, dental by 40%, establishing urgent care, supporting integration of behavioral health into primary care, and facilitating care management for complex populations.
Mr. Steiner’s commitment to improving health in vulnerable populations extends beyond his role as Sun River Health Board Chair. He founded a housing preservation company, sponsored by Sun River Health, which has assured safe, sanitary housing for low-income residents of Peekskill, and was also a founding board member of The Westchester-Putnam Adult Day Program, Legal Awareness of Westchester, and the Hudson Valley Health Care Task Force for the Homeless. As an active NACHC member, Mr. Steiner has been a strong advocate for community health centers, at the state and national levels. With NACHC he has served as Chair of the Credentials Committee and a member of the Consumer Board Committee, By-Laws Committee, Nominating Committee, and Membership Committee.
Mr. Steiner has experience sitting on many nonprofit boards, is an attorney, and is also a former legal services attorney. When he is not cheering for the Sun River Health cause, he enjoys singing with a barbershop chorus and practicing yoga, Pilates, and Zumba.
