Carole Robinson’s Signals to Freedom Show at the H-Art Gallery

Carole%20RobinsonHRHCare will present Signals to Freedom, a show of quilts from artist Carole Robinson, at the H-Art Gallery in Peekskill starting February 8th with opening receptions held on February 13th and 14th. A native New Yorker and consummate jewelry maker, lamp worker and quilter, Ms. Robinson will present a series of her own quilts featuring designs used as communication signals amongst slaves escaping to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Quilts such as these hung from porches and clothes lines throughout 19th century America to let runaway slaves know when, where and how to travel to safety. With Peekskill serving as a known stop on the Underground Railroad, Signals to Freedom serves not only as a tribute to Ms. Robinson’s artistic genius but also as a beautiful reminder of the community’s rich cultural history.

Signals to Freedom will show at the H-Art Gallery, 1 South Division Street in Peekskill, from February 8th until March 14th. An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 13th, from 5 to 8 PM and on Saturday, February 14th, from 12 to 6 PM.
