HRHCare Alamo Homework Club Kicks Off Fifth Year

authoress-maggio-hanischGoshen, NY – Last month the HRHCare Alamo Farmworker Community Center at Goshen kicked off this academic year’s Homework Club program for local children.  Author Maryanne Maggio Hanisch gave a special reading of her book “Go Now! With Professor Questa to Dinosaur National Monument” before signing copies for the 25 Homework Club students and their families.

HRHCare initiated the Alamo Homework Club five years ago to offer much needed academic support to children from local farmworker families. The Homework Club meets each Tuesday from September to June at 4:30 PM and is staffed entirely by volunteers, many of whom are retired teachers and have been with the program since its inception. Local high school students also volunteer with the program and provide translation support as needed. The children receive help with their assigned homework projects while learning general skills for future academic success.

Other services offered at the HRHCare Alamo Farmworker Community Center at Goshen include:

  • The Alamo Food Pantry
  • Sunday Hot Meals Program (January through April)
  • Groups for teen boys and girls
  • Pre-teen girls group
  • Support services for adults

Comprehensive health and dental services are also available next door  at the HRHCare Alamo Health Center at Goshen, located at 888 Pulaski Highway.

A fundraiser to support the programs at the Alamo will be held on October 16th at the Wickham Woodlands Manor in Warwick, NY. To reserve a ticket, contact Kathy Brieger at (845) 863-5938 or kbrieger@hrhcare.org.
