HRHCare and MHP Salud Offer Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Training in Spanish

Peekskill, NY – HRHCare (Hudson River HealthCare), a not-for-profit, federally qualified healthcare system offering a range of medical services for underserved areas throughout the Hudson Valley and Long Island, will host MHP Salud, an implementer of Community Health Worker programs for underserved Latino communities, for a type 2 diabetes prevention training in Spanish on Saturday, August 23.

The goal of this training is to increase knowledge of type 2 diabetes prevention among community health workers so that they are able to clearly relay the message that type 2 diabetes does not have to be our destiny because it can be prevented or delayed. Upon the completion of this training participants will be able to:

  • Define types, symptoms and complications of diabetes.
  • Explain how type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed.
  • Identify high risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
  • Understand how small lifestyle changes that can prevent or delay its onset.
  • Define and understand the importance of serving and portion size.

This training is aimed at HRHCare’s Health Promoters, women and men who engage in lay health education and community outreach in order to break down barriers to health. These Health Promoters will be coming from as far and wide as Peekskill, Yonkers, Haverstraw, Spring Valley, Dover Plains, and Hudson. Following the training, HRHCare will offer this CDC-approved types 2 diabetes education to Spanish-speakers throughout the Hudson Valley.

“This effort represents HRHCare’s continuing interest in innovative approaches to positively transforming the health of our communities, starting with the primary prevention of illness,” said Andrew Lehto, MSW, Special Populations Manager at HRHCare. “Our team of Health Promoters is excited for the training and excited to pass on the knowledge they will acquire.”
