HRHCare Yonkers Nurse Manager Wins Planetree Award for Excellence in Patient Care

Peekskill, NY – Hanny Sy - PhotoHRHCare (Hudson River HealthCare), a nonprofit, Federally Qualified Health Center offering a range of medical services for underserved communities throughout the Hudson Valley and Long Island, is proud to announce that Handumanan Sy, Nurse Manager of the HRHCare Park Care Health Center at Yonkers, will be presented with a Planetree Spirit Award for excellence in patient care. HRHCare’s Planetree Institute presents these awards to employees who go above and beyond to make health care more personalized and create a warm and welcoming environment for all.

A part of the HRHCare family for nearly four years, Handumanan Sy, known to her patients as “Hanny”, came to HRHCare after several years of working as a registered nurse at Mount Vernon Hospital, including time spent as the Administrative Nurse Coordinator of an outpatient treatment program serving the mentally ill. She was also respectfully known as “The Baby Whisperer” when serving as a labor and delivery nurse at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers. Something she has found continually rewarding in her health care career is seeing mothers and their babies come back again later, completing the circle of care. As a Nurse Health Coach and Nurse Manager at HRHCare, Handumanan has become known as a tireless advocate of patient-centered care and the importance of peace in the healing process. She uses visualization and quiet reflection to reduce stress when delivering staff trainings and has often been called a “calming force” by her patients. When asked her opinion on the most important things that patients need from their health care provider, Handumanan replied, “To be viewed as a whole; to help that connection of body, mind and spirit through our caring presence and intentionality. Patients also need mindfulness in all aspects of care and motivation to make them active partners in that care.” Handumanan is a Certified Pre and Postnatal Fitness Instructor, a Certified Prepared Childbirth Educator, a Holistic Nurse Coach and holds a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of San Agustin in the Philippines. In her spare time she enjoys sewing, playing a traditional Filipino stringed instrument called the Bandurria and supporting the Filipinas Foundation, an organization that supports families in need on the island of Guimaras.

“Hanny demonstrates enormous commitment to make HRHCare a success,” said Carlos Ortiz, Associate Vice President of Operations at HRHCare. “She is always looking for ways to maintain the happiness of her patients and staff through creative trainings and events. It has been such a great opportunity to work with this talented colleague and wonderful human being.”

Planetree is the global leader in advancing patient-centered care solutions, integrating the technology of modern medicine with the healing dimensions of compassion, comfortable surroundings, shared knowledge and freedom to make educated choices. HRHCare has been an affiliate since 1996 and remains the only Federally Qualified Health Center to be a part of this alliance. The HRHCare Planetree Institute was established in 2012 and provides state-of-the-art training to prepare staff in delivering passionate and personalized care. The HRHCare Planetree Spirit Award honors employees who have been nominated by their colleagues for going above and beyond to provide individualized patient care and enhance health care services in their respective facility.
