Peekskill, NY – HRHCare (Hudson River HealthCare), a nonprofit, federally qualified health care system offering a range of medical services for underserved communities throughout the Hudson Valley and Long Island, is proud to announce that Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has appointed Wilfredo Morel, Director of Hispanic Health at HRHCare, to join a Task Force that will work to implement the plan to end the AIDS epidemic in New York. The Task Force, staffed by experts and community advocates from across the state, will support the effort to reduce the number of new HIV infections and will perform public outreach and awareness campaigns in line with the Governor’s plan.

Before assuming his current position as HRHCare’s Director of Hispanic Health, Mr. Morel served as the organization’s Director of Genesis HIV Services; a position in which he was responsible for team leadership in HIV case management, testing and counseling as well as community health outreach, education and support services. Mr. Morel serves as co-chair of the New York Statewide AIDS Service Delivery Consortium Advisory Group and the Westchester County Department of Health AIDS Advisory Council and is a member of the National Latino/Hispanic AIDS Action Network and the New York State HIV Prevention Planning Group.

“I am honored to be part of a group that assures that the voice of those living with HIV/AIDS is heard, as well as the voice of those who have cared for them and promoted prevention,” said Morel. “It is a privilege and a great responsibility.”

The end of the AIDS epidemic in New York will occur when the total number of new HIV infections has fallen below the number of HIV-related deaths. The Governor’s three-point plan to decrease new HIV infections consists of identifying people with HIV who remain undiagnosed and linking them to health care; getting people diagnosed with HIV on anti-HIV therapy to maximize virus suppression and prevent further transmission; and providing access to PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) for high-risk people to keep them HIV negative.
