Hudson River HealthCare Holds Free Diabetes Workshop in Dutchess County
Workshop Designed to Inform and Provide Wellness and Healthcare Education
Peekskill, NY (February 11, 2014) – Hudson River HealthCare (HRHCare), a not-for-profit, federally qualified health care system offering a range of medical services at its facilities throughout New York State, announced today that it will hold a free, six-week Living Healthy with Diabetes workshop for adults with diabetes and caregivers of those dealing with diabetes at the Dutchess County Department of Public Health in Poughkeepsie, New York. The workshop will be held every Tuesday from 10:00a.m. – 12:30p.m., starting February 25, 2014.
“Whether it is offering medical treatment or organizing educational seminars, our number one focus will always be to provide our communities with access to affordable healthcare so the residents can live healthier lives,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of HRHCare. “This workshop is our way of helping those living with diabetes, which is a condition that affects the lives of many people in our communities, care for themselves, and receive the proper treatment.”
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes in 2011 and there were 1.9 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed in people ages 20 and older in 2010 alone. The ADA also estimates that Americans with diabetes spent a total of $245 billion 2012 on medical costs and reduced productivity, which is 2.3 times higher than the expected expenditures for those without diabetes.
The Living Healthy With Diabetes Workshop is organized by HRHCare in collaboration with the Dutchess County Department of Health. The workshop is part of HRHCare’s ongoing Healthy Choices NY Community Workshops, which offer wellness and self-management tutorials, discussions and workshops throughout Long Island and Hudson Valley following an evidence-based health promotion program developed by the Stanford Patient Education Research Center. Those attending the Living With Diabetes Workshop will learn how to maintain a healthy diet, effectively monitor blood sugar and develop exercise regiments.
“In most cases, diabetes can be managed through a properly balanced diet, steady exercise and the right medical treatment,” continued Nolon. “By educating the residents in our communities, we hope that they can take that information and continue living healthily with diabetes.”
